Compass Chronicles

I purchased my first antique pocket compass in 1998. I had no idea what a large project this seemingly innocent hobby would grow to become over the next decade. I realized early on that there were no detailed reference guides to help new collectors along on their path. Over the years, as I continued to collect pocket compasses, I tried to find as much information relating to the subject as possible.

This beautifully designed, large format, hard cover book is a guide through the wide range of pocket compasses, with colorful illustrations and detailed descriptions throughout. Various types of magnetic compasses are covered, such as escape, wrist, fob compasses, and even sundials to name only a few. The majority of compasses described in this book were manufactured between the mid-1800s and early 1900s. Examples reach back to the late 1700s and 1940s, WWII era models are also covered. It is hoped that this book will inspire readers who find these elusive instruments interesting and feel compelled to find out more. I also hope that it will be equally enjoyed by serious collectors who seek detailed information about specific models.
